It's time for happy hour!

1. RICH History

Beer history goes back many millennia. Theories point to the following origins: About 10,000 years ago, mankind began to collect grain almost simultaneously in China and in the area of the ancient ‘fertile crescent’ (today’s middle East) and discovered by chance that cereal porridge, left to stand for a few days, began to ferment.

Many civilizations of antiquity and medieval times relied heavily on beer as the safest available drink, as it was cleaner than most water sources.

2. Lager or ale?

All beers are either lagers or ales; that’s determined by the type of yeast used during the fermentation process. Lagers are made with yeast that ferments at the bottom of the beer mixture and ales are made with yeast that ferments at the top.

Ales, with a more bitter taste and a somewhat higher alcohol content, are served at room temperature, or even warm. Low fermentation beers, generally known as lagers, usually have a lighter, yellowish color and are served very cold. They are smoother, both in terms of flavor and aroma.

In the Kitchen

Beer is slightly acidic, which makes it an excellent meat tenderizer. Beer also won't alter the meat's flavor as strongly as wine- and vinegar-based marinades.

Poke a few holes in the meat, put it in a container or a large resealable bag, and add beer. Marinate in the refrigerator for a few hours or, better yet, overnight. English ale is great for beef.

4. Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your hair

Besides drinking, beer can be used as a cure for dull hair. It is rich in proteins and vitamins, and the alcohol in it helps cleanse and soften hair.

Just pour flat beer over your hair after shampooing, let it soak in for 4 to 5 minutes, and then rinse it with water to bring back your hair’s shine.
